- Svi Mykhailiuk of the Toronto Raptors and Alex Len of the Sacramento Kings are excited about Bitcoin’s ability to be uncensorable “freedom money” that allows anyone to fund humanitarian and human rights causes.
- Svi Mykhailiuk will wear sneakers with a “Shoe-R,” a scannable QR code that directs users to a Bitcoin wallet address where Bitcoin or other currencies can be donated.
Two Ukrainian NBA stars have teamed up Bitcoin Magazine to support Ukraine’s humanitarian relief efforts by allowing anyone to donate bitcoin by simply scanning a QR code on the front of the player’s shoe.
Toronto Raptors’ Svi Mykhailiuk and Sacramento Kings’ Alex Len worked with the Ukraine branch of Bitcoin Magazine to support this bitcoin-based fundraiser. Mykhailiuk will debut a custom pair of Nike sneakers adorned with the world’s first “Shoe-R” code, a Bitcoin wallet address in QR code format, in the first round of the NBA Playoffs tonight. And even though the Kings season is over, Len will also show his support for the cause by posting about it on social media.
“The world is united in support of the people whose lives have been devastated by the invasion of Ukraine, and we are committed to doing our part by making it easy for everyone to donate to humanitarian relief efforts,” said Mike Germano, Editor from Bitcoin Magazine. “The conflict in Ukraine is the first truly modern war in which information, fake news and censorship are as important as kinetic weapons.”
“Bitcoin is an incredibly powerful weapon against financial censorship, whether it’s an authoritarian regime shutting down NGO bank accounts — or Trudeau doing the same with supporters of the ‘Trucker protests,'” added Germano.
If you want to donate, all you have to do is scan the shoes of one of the players mentioned above. People who want to support the initiative can also visit b.tc/ukraine to donate in Bitcoin or a number of other major currencies.
“What is happening in our home country is a tragedy, but we are heartened by the incredible support and generosity that people around the world are showing,” Mykhailiuk and Len said in a joint statement on the release.
“We’re bitcoiners ourselves, so we know bitcoin is the most effective way to send money instantly to those who need it; quickly, at minimal cost, and in a censorship-resistant manner. Each satoshi will help support displaced families, as well as provide humanitarian and refugee assistance inside and outside of Ukraine,” they added.
Mykhailiuk will be showcasing his Shoe-R-Code sneakers today at 6:00 p.m. EST in the Raptors’ first playoff game against the Philadelphia 76ers at the Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, PA. All proceeds will be donated to Hope for Ukraine, part of the Len-D A Hand Foundation, the charity that plays a leading role in providing humanitarian assistance to refugees and others affected by the war in Ukraine.
