Crypto venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) is investing heavily in the core research of the industry. It recently hired Colombian professor Tim Roughgarden as research lead for its crypto research unit.

Tim Roughgarden, a theoretical computer scientist and professor at Columbia University, will lead the a16z Crypto Research team. Roughgarden’s resume includes 14 years at Stanford and more than three years as a computer science professor at Columbia University in New York.

He has been a scientific partner at a16z since February 2021. In addition, the company has highlighted Roughgarden’s skills in computer science, research and business. Additionally, his crypto and blockchain course at Columbia was named the “best and most popular” introduction to crypto. Additionally, Roughgarden was among the first to provide a formal study on Ethereum’s EIP-1559 fee mechanism upgrade.

As one of the most active crypto venture capital firms, a16z reportedly has around $9 billion in funds. According to Roughgarden’s claim, its funding for crypto research will grow “manyfold over the next few years.”
According to the company, “new entrepreneurial ideas for a Web3 application or protocol tend to uncover new research challenges” that are critical to solidifying the future of blockchain and crypto.
